English student - Anita

I joined an English course at Newton House because I’ve never been any good at reading and writing. I didn’t like school and very rarely went so I ended up not being able to read and write well. That’s meant I’ve only ever been able to do boring jobs because I couldn’t cope with filling in forms and so on. Now I want to get a job that will fulfil me and make me happy – I want better for myself. To be honest it took me three goes before I plucked up the courage to go in and sign up for the course but I’m so glad I did, as I have learnt so much and gained so much confidence. I always avoided reading and writing but now I write just for the enjoyment of it. My spelling has improved, I can use a dictionary well, I can write letters – my children have even noticed my spelling in my texts has improved! My tutor was so lovely – she realised I was nervous and avoided putting me on the spot. She came and sat with me and helped me when I needed it. Now I can speak out in the class – helped by the fact that the other people in the class are all very friendly. To anyone thinking of doing a course I’d say go for it – I don’t know why I waited so long!
